Even in a world full of digital payment apps, learning how to write a check is still an important skill. Checks are often required for rent payments, school fees, utility deposits, charitable donations, and business transactions. If you're a Valex Federal Credit Union member, writing checks can be easy, secure, and reliable. Especially, when you know what to do.

Whether you’re just opening your first checking account or need a quick refresher, here’s your complete step-by-step guide.

Step-by-Step: How to Fill Out a Check

  1. Date
Write the current date in the top right corner. You can use numbers (04/30/2025) or spell it out (April 30, 2025). This shows when the check was written.
  2. Payee Line ("Pay to the Order of")
Clearly write the name of the person, company, or organization receiving the check. Be sure the name is spelled correctly.
  3. Amount in Numbers
Write the amount of the check in numbers in the small box (e.g., 125.00). Include both dollars and cents.
  4. Amount in Words
On the line beneath the payee’s name, write the same amount in words (e.g., One hundred twenty-five and 00/100). This confirms the correct amount.
  5. Memo Line (Optional)
Use this line to write why you're writing the check (e.g., “May Rent” or “Graduation Gift”). This is helpful for your own records.
  6. Signature
Sign your name on the line in the bottom right corner. Without a signature, the check is not valid and cannot be cashed or deposited.

Top Mistakes to Avoid

  • Don’t leave blank lines—always fill out every field.
  • Never use pencil—always use a pen so no one can change it.
  • Don’t post-date unless you’ve arranged it with the person receiving the check.
  • Be careful not to write over the edges of boxes or lines—keep it clean and legible.
